Lots of sand dune climbing in Vee Cove

Underway from Isla Coronado, I pulled out the jib around the north side of the island – knowing I was being optimistic. Whelp, sure enough it didn’t last more than twenty minutes before the wind was on our nose and it didn’t get any better the rest of the passage. Oh well, it was a comfortable ride and we really needed to charge the batteries so was fine.

Arriving to an empty Vee cove a few hours later, woohoo. We dropped the anchor and with some wind from the NE it pushed us towards the nearby rock wall. This is a tight spot but we had good holding and the overnight forecast looked good. So we go settled in to another private anchorage.

After a bit, Jean and I paddled into shore to explore the sand dunes and to get some exercise. The lack of footprints led us to believe no one had visited since last week’s wind event, which was nice. A bit of a scramble up the steep dunes got us on the ridge to look up the valley and across into what must be a spectacular waterfall when the rains are happening. We had a fun ski down the other side of the dunes and walked the wash back to the beach. Then off to explore the sea caves via the kayaks. There was a swell and it was close to high tide so we gave plenty of room to avoid getting smashed. I headed back to get dinner started while Jean explored a bit more.

A calm night, and slowish start to the day before the three us paddled in to explore the sand dunes again. Retracing our steps, but with a camera this time, we reached the “ski” part of the dunes and Jean tricked us into many trips down – after the hard work of running back up. After six or seven times I was done. We made it back to shore where Vicki was checking out the area a bit longer and Jean took to more working out along the beach with lunges and strides. In the dinghy we explored the sea caves. We could go deeper today, due to the low tide and it was quite the difference from the swell and high tide we had yesterday that forced us to keep our distance.
