Dissasembly and repair of the saloon table mechanism (lift and spin) on a Seawind 1160

Strikhedonia is a 2008 Seawind 1160, I cannot comment on later models but from outside appearances, it looks like Seawind has not changed the design since the early models.

The troublesome table (the lifting and spinning mechanism) has been a major headache for many owners to deal with. SV Sky Pond would only spin the table clockwise for fear of unbolting the strut. I had attempted to disassemble the table a few times and each time ran into a roadblock. Today I was now committed to figuring it out.

Want to know what we did???
First I drilled a hole in the upper area of the inner tube (attached to the table top) so that I could get a borescope inside to look at the mechanics. This was helpful but didn’t completely tell the story.

Next Allan and I worked to remove the tabletop to see if there was an access in the top plate that mounts to the table top. To do this we took out the twenty screws, followed by using a razor blade to try to cut off the adhesive, no luck. I tried to cut the adhesive with a wire, again no luck. Finally we lowered the table and with our knees underneath we managed to pop it off.

Once off we could see that the top plate was sealed, so no help. Earlier we tried to get the table tubes separated by slamming the table to the top but we feared breaking something. With the table top off, we had the ability to slam it up in a more vertical direction. After a couple bangs I was convinced that the bearing was starting to move. Sure enough a few more bangs and it was clearly moving. And a bit later we had it separated.

The pictures tell the story but in my case, there was nothing attached to the top of the gas strut. My boat may have been missing a piece from the factory but even so I don’t see how spinning the table would cause any damage.

WHAT DID I LEARN:
1. Spinning the table doesn’t matter
2. The strut is NOT as tall as the top of the table and if you exceed the height of the strut the end of the strut will bang back and forth against the inner tube when in rolling seas
3. My boat no longer locked the height and didn’t restrict spinning due to the handle wearing down, this was fixes by inserting two #10 flat washers between the taper pin and the Delrin ring (closing the handle formed the washers to match the shape of the taper pin)
4. We lubed everything with silicon prior to reassembly
5. I may buy a 2″ Delrin ball, drill and tap a hole in the end and attach it to the top of the gas strut to allow the table to be slightly higher during passages and keep the gas strut from banging
