A day stop at Balandra before anchoring in Ensenada la Gallina

Another early day to beat the daily winds that funnel through Cerralvo Channel. A small trawler followed behind us out of the anchorage and an hour later blew on past. We tried our hand at sailing, which failed. After accepted our fate, it was a motorsail up to Balandra. Jack, had visited a few years ago and loved this spot. I’ve stopped here a number of times years ago and had heard there were changes to the rules due to a commercial charter boat that sunk and spilled diesel and gas on this sensitive area. Due to that accident, overnight anchoring is no longer permitted, so it would just be a day stop.

Anchor down we dropped the dinghy and I shuttled Vicki and Jack over for a snorkel, while I took care of some business aboard. Half an hour later, I retrieved them and took in their stories of goliath groupers, massive trigger fish, and of cleaning up trash from the bottom of the ocean that turned out to be pesos – score! Back aboard I got us underway while they showered off over to our spot for the night on Isla Espirito Santo in Ensenada la Gallina. A couple hours later and after swimming the anchor (to check it and to cool off), we settled into a beautiful quiet spot that we had all to ourselves. But boy was it hot and no breeze was to be found. So the fans were turned on and we did our cooking outside in the air fryer. Vicki served some ribs we picked up in Cabo along with bake potatoes, asparagus, and a salad. Yum! And even with eyes heavy from the long day, we committed to finishing the movie we started last night. And beyond all belief I made it until the end!

The next morning we toured the anchorage with the dinghy and found hundreds of sea turtles! The were covered in sand and in the shallows but even in the murky water we would see them swish off as we approached. Exploring the mangroves we found a spot to park the dinghy and explore the shore. With miles to make we headed back to Strikhedonia to get the anchor raised and move one to our next spot.
