I was up before sunrise, eager to watch the morning light from the top of the boat. I climbed up, and less than a minute later, retreated right back inside. Jejenes (biting midges) and gnats were out in massive abundance. Fuck. Oh well—they usually bugger off by mid-morning.
Once Jack was up, he suggested getting underway for Bahía de Los Ángeles. I initially shot it down – I love Refugio, and it might be two years before I pass through here again. However, after morning coffee and another weather check, I reconsidered. It was a decent day to move south, and if we stayed put, the next window was a week away. Bugs and a seven day wait made the choice for us. Anchor up and on our away. Passing through the channel between the islands, we were surprised to see another boat. So much for having the place completely to ourselves.
Turning south, we hugged the Baja coast to stay out of the worst of the wind funneling down Whale Channel ahead. We used the sails to assist the engine and save some diesel. As we approached the spot where the Pacific wind pours in over the peninsula, it dawned on me that we should probably reef. We dropped to reef 2, which is good up to 27 knots. Turned out to be a very good call because minutes later, the wind jumped to 23 knots (forecasted to be a 5–7). We got some lumpy wave action, but hugging the Baja side made for an easier crossing.
Once we reached the Bahía LA area, the wind died and we motored into Don Juan, which we had completely to ourselves. Jack took a swim before our passage beer, followed by a great dinner of green curry veggies with chicken. Another early night to bed after back-to-back go, go, go days.
