After a low key recovery/boat project day yesterday, I was ready for some real exercise. Hiking around Isla Mejía is a must every time I’m here. Once I finished my coffee and after watching the sunrise from the top of the boat, I headed out. I dinghied over and explored more of the island than I ever had before, including a super‑sketchy climb up one of the hills.
The day had a bit of extra drama when I realized the long‑sleeve shirt I dropped while heading toward a second hill climb was missing. That turned into a half‑hour search, and I was close to giving up before finally stumbling across it. Ugh. That was dumb.
In the evening, Jenna, Joe, and Geraldo came over for a fantastic potluck steak dinner. Great company and great food!
What a view to start the day
A view showing the extreme low tide, probably 12-14 feet.
A very low tide, that would allow hiking to the spit of land on the eastern side of the island
The green shows how rarely this much land is showing
These birds were annoyed with my presence
Extremely sad to see wildlife killed by discarded fishing gear
Quite the view part way up the first hill
At times it was a bouldering climb, not very smart given the consequences of a slip on a sheer face...
Just about to the top, it is impossible to capture the stupidity of my taking on this route
Whew, I made it!
This looks worse that it is, there was good footing and handholds
Taking the arroyo down was much smarter and what I should have done on the climb up
That ridgeline was my route up and around the corner was the decent
Top of hill number two looking at the pinnacle rock
A group dinner of steak, Puerto Rican rice and bean, along with a couple of salads
Dinner with the crews of SV MiCancion and SV Cigano
