Creating a VPN tunnel from Starlink to a home network using Raspberry Pi devices

Mike on SV Genesis shared with me a way to setup a VPN server at home and a VPN client on the boat using Raspberry Pi devices that will allow access to my home network/internet

Raspberry Pi 3 (Home)

  • Install the PiVPN package
  • Install Wireguard
  • On the PiVPN server, create a Wireguard config for the client
  • Create a ddclient (DDNSFREE – www.dynu.com) config that connects to a dynamic DNS server and updates a DNS name of the home VPN server
  • Assign a fixed IP address to the Raspberry Pi
  • Configure home router to UDP port forward (51820) to the fixed IP address of Raspberry Pi
  • Connect ethernet cable between Raspberry Pi and home router

Raspberry Pi 3 (Boat)

  • Install RaspAP (WiFi access point on the boat)
  • Upload the config to RaspAP
  • Install the client Wireguard config
  • Connect Starlink via an Ethernet cable

Software Components:

  • PiVPN (www.pivpn.io) – Script to simplify the installation and setup of Wireguard
  • Wireguard (www.wireguard.com) – VPN server using open-source protocols
  • Dynamic DNS (www.dynu.com) – Dynamic hostname that is used to access the home VPN server when/if the external IP changes for home
  • RaspAP (www.raspap.com) – Wireless router software
